Has your system slowed down recently for no good
reason? What about those annoying pop ups and banner ads? Have you been
redirected to a page that you would never go to ordinarily? Are you
familiar with Sypware or Adware?
Not too long ago, I lost a brand new computer to
malware, spyware and viruses. I was ignorant, reactionary and slow in
responding to the problem. In the end, it cost me my computer.
There are two levels of protection: Software and
Senseware
On the software level, acquire and deploy
1. Anti Virus protection 2. Firewall protection 3.
Scan and remove
On the common sense level,
1. View every email as a potential threat
2. Set browser security to medium
3. Avoid file sharing
4. Turn moden off when not in use
5. Use secure server for online transactions
6. Be very cautious about free downloads
Deploy
Anti Virus:
Protection
Anti virus are program that try to
identify and revome malicious programs (malware) from your computer by
scanning your system drives, identifying and removing these malicious
codes. There are plenty of antivirus softwares in the market. Some can
even be procured for free. But like most things you get what you paid
for. Some can be purchased outright and some on a subscription basis.
Anitivirus need to be updated frequently for new definitions if they
are to remain effective. Antivirus do not necessarily prevent you from
getting malware, they are designed to identify and remove them before

good firewall
A firewall is a set of related programs that limit
access to a network or system. It can be likened to a door or gateway
that only allows access to those with a key. The purpose of a firewall
is to keep safe what is inside and keep out what is outside. Firewalls
can also keep log of attempted intrussions. Like antivirus softwares,
firewalls are plentyful. Some can be securebed on a subscription basis
and some purchased outright. Firewalls like antiviruses should be
updated frequently and enabled all the time.
Deploy a
good scan and remove software
Scan and remove softwares are usually geared
towared adware and spyware removal. Like firewalls and antiviruses,
they have to be updated frequently for new difinitions. Scan and remove
program need to be run regularly to keep your system clean.
View
every email as potiential threat
Emails are a quick and effective way to
communicate. They can also be a quick way to spread viruses. A good
rule of thumb is to view every email that you do not recognize as a
potential threat. For such emails, the common sense thing to do is to
delete without openning them.
Set your
browser security to medium
From your browser, select tools, on the pulldown
menu, select internet options, select the security tab and slide the
setting up to medium. The medium setting gives you a good level, while
not compromising your surfing ease.
Avoid
file sharing
File sharing can be a quick and easy way to
contract adware or spyware scripts and these tend to be bundled with
the shared file.
Turn
off Modem and Disconnect connections:
On a dial up, log out when you are not surfing.
This disconnects you from the internet and from any potential harm when
not in use. If you are on DSL or Broadband, it is a good idea to turn
your modem off when you are not surfing. This is because with DSL, you
computer is constantly connected to the Internet. Only by manually
turnning it off can you be disconnected from the web and from potential
unwanted access.
Use
secure server:
When doing your transactions on the web, do your
due dilligence. Watch out for servers that are not secured and avoid
transmitting personal and financial information. .
